This heartwarming equine photoshoot of Laene and her beloved horse CP took place just outside Cape Town, Durbanville, surrounded by golden fields, soft evening light, and quiet country charm. Full Story: A Soulful Horse & Rider Photoshoot with Laene and CP

There’s something timeless and grounding about a woman and her horse. This photoshoot with Laene and CP, set in the wide, open fields outside Durbanville, was all about honoring that deep, almost unspoken connection between horse and rider.

The location offered rustic textures, natural light, and plenty of space for CP to roam while we captured their story with authenticity, elegance, and grace.

A Gentle Bond, Captured Through the Lens

Laene reached out with a clear vision: she didn’t just want pretty pictures—she wanted to celebrate the journey she and CP have walked together. From quiet mornings in the stables to powerful gallops through the fields, their relationship is built on trust, patience, and years of companionship.

During the shoot, it was easy to see how in tune they are. CP responded to Laene’s calm energy with softness and subtle cues, which made for incredible, honest moments that didn’t need staging.

Why Equine Photography Is So Special

Photographing horses is unlike any other kind of portrait work. Horses are sensitive, expressive, and powerful beings. You can’t rush or direct them—you have to work with their rhythm.

For this shoot, I focused on:

  • Capturing emotive moments between Laene and CP

  • Highlighting the scale and strength of CP against the soft landscape

  • Using natural light to create warm, golden tones that mirror their connection

  • Keeping the vibe natural and peaceful, reflecting Laene’s energy

Whether it was a gentle nuzzle or a quiet walk down a dusty path, each frame told a story of partnership, respect, and love.

Styling & Wardrobe Choices

Laene chose her wardrobe thoughtfully—colourful tones, flowing textures, and soft layers that complemented the landscape and CP’s chestnut coat. We went for a neutral, grounded palette of orange which helped keep the focus on the emotion and movement of the photos.

For horse photography, wardrobe plays a crucial role. It needs to:

  • Be comfortable and allow movement

  • Avoid overly bright colours or distracting patterns

  • Reflect the personality and tone of the relationship

Laene’s look struck that balance perfectly: graceful, strong, and serene.

The Setting: Just Outside Durbanville

Durbanville’s countryside is known for its rolling hills, tall grasses, and open skies. This location was private and peaceful, giving CP the space to relax and behave naturally. It also allowed us to shoot at golden hour, when the sunlight is soft and warm—ideal for creating the dreamy, painterly quality I love in equine portraits.

Technical Details & Lighting

The late afternoon light was our secret weapon. I worked mostly with natural light, occasionally using reflectors to add soft highlights and enhance the warmth on Laene’s face and CP’s features.

We chose compositions that allowed for:

  • Wide, cinematic shots of the landscape and horse

  • Intimate close-ups of connection and detail

  • Candid moments of movement, like walking, grazing, and playful nudges

These gave Laene a versatile gallery for framing, sharing online, and keeping as treasured memories.

Why Invest in a Horse & Rider Photoshoot?

Whether you’re a rider, trainer, or horse owner, these images become part of your legacy. You’ll look back and remember the feeling, the sound of hoofbeats, the quiet strength of your horse beside you.

What Laene Said After the Shoot:

“This shoot meant more to me than I can explain. CP is a huge part of my life, and seeing our story through Elaine’s lens brought tears to my eyes. These photos are everything I hoped for—and more.”
